Verne's personal background
Verne is a graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Law School. He engaged in the private practice of law for more than 40 years, before retiring in 2001. Verne and his wife, Dr. Anita Paine Vance, have lived in Newton for 36 years. Their three children, Lisa, Chip, and Virginia, were all educated at Bowen, Brown, and Newton South. Before his election to the Newton Board of Aldermen in 1981, Verne served as co-president of the Bowen School PTO and as recording secretary of the Newton PTO Council. Verne is a member of the First Church of Chestnut Hill (Unitarian).
